During my weekly business networking call, a client of mine that was also on the call shared with the group, “Lida will meet you where you’re at.” That is one of the best compliments I could receive. As I thought more about what that statement meant to me, I felt it important enough to share with you why I thought as much.
We all have a story. That’s our past. Your story is unique to you, and everything about your past has brought you right to this moment. I know for myself that at my core, I am a super active person who watches what I eat, but even knowing that I still go in and out of fitness and nutrition like most other people. We are never the same from day-to-day, month-to-month, or year-to-year. There are many reasons for this – a job, a new baby in the family, a death, stress/exhaustion, or a lack of motivation. When roadblocks seem to be nearly a daily occurrence, and you don’t always have the skill to navigate around them, this is the time you need a coach.
Our past comes with voices that might tell us we’re scared or maybe that we need to be perfect at whatever we do. The perfectionist approach will most likely influence us to do nothing because, well, who’s perfect? Just start. Start at exactly where you are right now, and your coach should meet you there. A basketball player shoots tens of thousands of shots a year and still misses. An Olympic gymnast practices over and over and still falls. What do they do? They get up and do it again. They try again – over and over. I like to say, “There is no such thing as perfection, but we can be perfect in the moment.” You make the best decision that can be made in that moment with the knowledge and skills that you have. Could it be better? Probably. But life is meant to be lived in: embrace, enjoy, and love who you are.
It’s important that you are met at exactly where you are today, not where you want to be or where you were before. So, where are you today? Do you have mobility or stability issues, bad eating habits, lack of motivation, health issues, or just need inspiration to change? Now’s the time for the future – your new journey. How do you want that to look? Do you want to be fitter? Do you want better habits? Maybe you want to sleep better and have more energy? Do you want to find more balance? Your coach can help you with where you want to go.
A good coach will not decimate you just to demonstrate they can put together a tough workout. It’s not a coach’s job to give you an exercise or food plan based on what works for them. It is the coach’s job to listen to you, to really hear your story. To hear where you want to go. To learn and understand what works for you and give you a plan designed for you. The relationship between you and your coach is a trusted relationship as it’s difficult to make changes to one aspect of your life without possibly changing other aspects, or at least reviewing and examining your current habits. It’s your coach’s job to meet you where you are today.
A coach will challenge you, get you out of your comfort zone, and introduce you to new ideas and approaches to change. They will motivate, support, and help you navigate your tomorrow. Small incremental changes can lead to big changes over the course of time. A coach can help you be Your. Best. Self.
